I have particularly specified Indian cinema as this movie has proven to be a hit among audiences across states. Be it Bollywood’s Chak De India and Mary Kom or Irudhi Suttru and Chennai 28 in Tamil, Indian films have explored stories of individuals in different sports. But there is one film industry in India that is really shining in the sports genre - the Malayalam industry.

Diwanjimoola Grand Prix (2018)

Sajan Joseph IAS, newly-appointed district collector of Thrissur spearheads the initiative to bring back a bike race at the Diwanjimoola race track after three decades. Intending to use the race track as a platform to constructively resolve conflicts, Sajan has a tough task in hand. Directed by Anil Radhakrishnan Menon, Diwanjimoola Grand Prix features Kunchacko Boban in the lead and also sees many actors reprise characters from popular movies like Pranchiyettan & the Saint, Thoovanathumbikal to name a few.

Captain (2018)

Captain is a biographical sports drama based on the life of V.P Sathyan, former captain of the Indian football team. The movie sees Jayasurya take on the lead role and revisits many key moments from the life of the former football icon. Godha (2017)

Godha is a sports comedy directed by Basil Joseph that focusses on the sport of wrestling. In the movie, Aditi Singh (Wamiqa Gabbi) wants to pursue wrestling but is restricted by her elder brother. When she meets Aanjaneya Das (Tovino Thomas), son of a renowned former wrestler Captain (Renji Panicker), Aditi leaves Punjab with Das to train under Captain. Featuring chartbuster music by Shaan Rahman, Godha is a laugh riot that explores the passion for wrestling within its central characters.

1983 (2014)
1983 is a coming-of-age sports drama with Nivin Pauly, Anoop Menon and Nikki Galrani in the lead roles. It follows the life of Rameshan (Nivin Pauly) and his passion for cricket from the year 1983 when India won the Cricket World Cup. Often seen as a tribute to Sachin Tendulkar, the movie explores Rameshan’s love for cricket from his teens to adulthood, despite many hardships. The movie won many awards for it's lead actor Nivin Pauly and got music director Gopi Sundar a National Award for Best Background Score.
