BENEFITS OF HYDROLYSED PROTEINS

As we all know, in our body, the role of protein spans well beyond building strong muscles. Recently I attended a interactive bloggers meet organised by Protinex where renowned nutritionist Kavita Devgan educated us about the importance of  protein and busted few myths around protein. She also launched Protein Calculator by Protinex to access protein intake. During this session, I was surprised to learn that protein is involved in almost every body function. Proteins are large complex molecules composed of Amino Acids, joined with peptide bond. 20 diverse types of Amino Acids are required by human body. Nonessential amino acids can be made by the body, while essential amino acids cannot be made by the body, so we must get them from our diet. Proteins are key macronutrients needed for growth and development, maintenance of muscle mass, for functioning of enzymes and hormones, transport of oxygen, healthy hairs and nails, to support immunity and as a source of energy. In short, protein is essential to our health, and it’s important to make sure we’re consuming the right amount.

HOW MUCH PROTEIN WE SHOULD EAT:
Average requirement of healthy adult is 1 g of protein per Kg body weight per day. The protein requirement differs based on age, gender, weight and physical activity.

MYTHS REGARDING PROTEIN IN OUR DIET:
In India, people have lot of myths regarding protein in their diet. The IMRB survey report revealed that 73% of Indians believe that green leafy vegetables are a good source of protein,  29% people think that their regular daily diet is enough for their daily protein needs, and 30 % believe that 1 egg a day provides enough protein, which is not true.

It is important for us to consume the right quantity and quality of protein every day at frequent intervals such as hydrolyzed or pre-digested protein for faster protein delivery. The protein requirement differs based on age, gender, weight and physical activity.

MORE ABOUT HYDROLYSED PROTEIN
Protein Hydrolysate- Derived from intact protein source by enzymatic hydrolysis to obtain a mixture of tri, di and polypeptides. Also known as "Pre-digested" proteins. These are obtained by addition of proteolytic enzymes to purified protein sources, followed by some purification steps. It mimics the digestion process and result in intact proteins breaking down into single amino acids and small amino-acid peptide strands.

Hydrolysed proteins are mixture of peptides mainly trip and di peptides and a few free amino acids (pre-digested proteins) that are easily absorbed by the intestine and doesn't need to go through the complex process of breaking down like intact proteins.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF HYDROLYSED PROTEINS :

a) Effect on amino acids:

  • Fuels greater delivery of amino acids from the gut to muscles
  • May also enhance the speed of delivery of the amino acids
  • Gives less time to the liver to extract crucial amino acids (essential AA's) as they flow towards the muscles, thereby allowing more amino acids to reach the muscles, contributing to muscle protein synthesis.
b) Enhances glycogen replenishment-insulinotropic effect
  • Hydrolysates have a significantly higher insulinotropic effect i.e. enhancing the production/activity of insulin
  • This causes superior glycogen replacement and greater anabolic response i.e. increase in muscle mass
c) Faster recovery post workout and intra workout performance

  • A study has shown that protein hydrolysate helps in accelerating recovery from exercise induced muscle damage.
  • Ingestion of protein hydrolysate with carbohydrate during and immediately after exercise improves whole-body protein synthesis.

d) Hydrolyzed proteins are less allergenic ( or immune-response-inducing) for babies who are at risk for food allergies  or immune diseases. Studies have shown its use in infants with cow milk allergy

e) Can be used in elderly- There is reduction in rate and efficiency of protein digestion and subsequent absorption of amino acids in elderly. It is suggested that the ingestion of a protein hydrolysate, as opposed to its intact protein, might accelerate protein digestion and absorption, increase plasma amino acid availability and, as such, augment the postprandial muscle protein synthetic response.

PROTEIN CALCULATOR
As per a recent IMRB survey, 73% of urban Indian population is protein deficient with Lucknow having the highest deficiency at 90%, Mumbai at 70% and Delhi at 60%. Kolkata had the least protein deficiency at 43%.

93% of Indians are unaware of their ideal protein requirement and believe that they are getting enough protein in their diet. Hence, Protinex developed a simple Protein Calculator to help Indians assess their protein intake. This newest high tech offering from Danone India, allows the consumer to calculate their protein intake and take remedial actions in their diet or through protein supplements that offer the right quantity and quality of protein in a convenient format.

The calculator is an easy to use tool to calculate one's daily protein intake and improve one's diet to fulfil the need for protein.

  • The Protein Calculator states the total amount of protein intake considering each meal that a person consumes in a day. Along with this, it also informs the protein inadequacy so that the Indians can keep a track of their protein intake daily.
